SCOTUS Decision on Affirmative Action – A Message from our CEO

On June 29, 2023,  the Supreme Court of the United States reversed decades of precedent, undermining the incredible strides educational institutions have made to improve access to education for all.

These programs were largely focused on giving historically underrepresented groups greater opportunities to education. In general, these programs focus on:

1) Leveling the playing field, ensuring all (including underrepresented groups) have access to good education

2) Increasing and promoting diversity within schools (to expand the learning experience and improve cultural competence, which is critical in an increasingly globalized world).

Since this decision, there has been a lot of uproar as to just how damaging it is. And yes, it is most certainly a set back and will no doubt impact the admission of underrepresented groups into these institutions.

With that said, it is also important to recognize that the decision should ultimately not bring those efforts to a halt. After all, the court acknowledged that race and its implications on a candidate cannot entirely be discarded, when it stated:

“nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise.”

Additionally, Justice Sotomayor in her dissenting opinion pointed out that “colleges can consider students who speak multiple languages or could be the first in their family to attend college.” As “those factors are not ‘interchangeable’ with race.”

So to all those knee deep in this work, who wake up each day, roll up their sleeves and take the punches…do not despair. Are these challenging times? Yes, they are. But we will put our brilliant heads together and find a way forward for there is much work to be done.
